Galmo Sukhe Recipe | Konkani Dry Prawns Sukha

Galmo Sukhe is a simple and flavourful Konkani-style dry prawns recipe made with galmo, garlic, coconut, turmeric, and homemade masala. In coastal homes, galmo is loved for its strong seafood flavour and quick cooking time. This recipe does not need many ingredients, but the taste is rich, rustic, and very comforting.

This Galmo Sukhe Recipe is perfect for days when you want something quick with rice, dal, chapati, or bhakri. It is a dry side dish, so it also works well in a simple lunch plate with solkadhi, steamed rice, and any mild vegetable sabji.

What is Galmo?

Galmo means tiny dried prawns or dried shrimp. Since it is dried, it naturally has a salty taste and a strong seafood aroma. That is why it should be cleaned properly before cooking.

Galmo is commonly used in coastal kitchens for dry recipes, chutney-style dishes, and simple side dishes. When cooked with onion, tomato, coconut, and masala, its strong flavour becomes balanced and tasty.

Preparation of Galmo Sukhe

Chop the onion finely so it cooks evenly and blends well into the masala. Slice or chop the tomato into small pieces so it softens quickly while cooking.

Keep both onion and tomato ready before starting the cooking process, as they form the base of the dish and help build the flavour.

Why You’ll Like This Recipe –

This Galmo Sukhe Recipe is simple, quick, and full of flavour. It is not a curry and not too gravy-like. The texture stays mostly dry, which makes it perfect as a side dish.

It goes well with steamed rice, dal-rice, chapati, or bhakri. If you like traditional Konkani seafood recipes, this dish gives a very homely coastal taste.

Texture of Galmo Sukhe

The final texture of Galmo Sukhe should be mostly dry but not too hard. Coconut helps balance the strong seafood taste and keeps the dish soft and flavourful.

If you want to eat it with chapati or bhakri, you can keep it slightly moist. If you are serving it with rice and dal, you can make it more dry.

  6. 6

Add a little water, cover the pan, and cook for 4–5 minutes on low flame. This helps the galmo become soft and absorb the masala.

Aaji's Tip

Galmo is naturally salty, so taste before adding salt and cook it slowly with simple ingredients to let it absorb the masala well.

Notes
Wash and drain galmo quickly; avoid soaking. Lightly roast if the smell is strong. Add salt only if needed, as it is already salty.
